How to clean a fabric sofa

Your fabric sofa looks great when new, but it rarely lasts. With daily use, cushions flatten, spills and stains appear, and musty odors linger on even the best sofas. And before you know it, your sofa will look like it’s well-worn, to say the least.

The good thing is that you can recover your colorful fabric sofa, and we can show you how. We’ve put together our best tips and advice for cleaning soft sofa upholstery, so you can keep it looking better for longer. This is what you should do:

How to clean my fabric sofa

1.-Vacuum weekly

Vacuum your fabric sofa once a week with the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner. Vacuum the entire surface of the sofa and remove the cushions to get to the most hidden crumbs and dust. You can use the crevice tool to reach deeper crevices. If you suspect coins, cover the end of the hose with a sock and secure it with a rubber band to easily pick up stray items.

You can have a mini vacuum cleaner on hand that will also help you vacuum the car.

2. Remove pet hair

If it is pet hair, remove it with a lint roller; Some are designed specifically for this purpose, like Beldray’s Antibac Plus Gel Roller. Or, dampen a clean rubber glove and gently wipe it over the surface of the couch. It generates static electricity, which will attract unruly hairs.

3. Give the cushions a little love

Remove cushion and seat covers and wash according to label instructions and fabric type. Most of them require professional cleaning, but some can be washed in the washing machine. Don’t risk washing clothes in the washing machine if it isn’t specified to do so.

4. Treat localized stains

Treat stains as soon as possible for more success removing them. Blot most of the stain with paper towels, working from the outside in. Before continuing, check the care label for instructions on which products you can use.

A «W» symbol on the care label means that water-based cleaners are allowed, including regular stain removers and steam cleaners. An «S» indicates waterless solvent cleaners only (also known as dry cleaning), while an «X» means vacuum only. You can use water-based cleaners if there is an «S-W or W-S» symbol. This is a combination of the first two. If you are unsure, always check with the manufacturer.

If you see a W or S-W/W-S on the care label, gently apply a little mild detergent combined with warm water to remove the stain, following the instructions for drying the initial stain. Check the color fastness in an inconspicuous area first. Failing that, you can go ahead and use a specific upholstery cleaner, such as Dr Beckmann’s Upholstery Stain Removers. You can also apply some carpet cleaning solutions to the upholstery, such as Vanish Oxi Action Carpet and Upholstery Stain Remover Spray. Always follow the instructions on the package. Rinse off any soap residue with a damp cloth once you’re done.

For especially tough stains, you can also use a spot cleaner or carpet cleaner with an upholstery attachment. Simply check that it is suitable for use on upholstery and test on an inconspicuous area first. Let your sofa dry sufficiently afterwards. 5. Clean the sofa with steam

Steam is great for cleaning a fabric sofa bottom. Look for steam cleaners and clothing steamers with upholstery attachments for this purpose. Although you should always check the care label to confirm that steam cleaning is appropriate before proceeding and test on an inconspicuous area first.

Again, look for a «W» symbol on the care label to verify that steam cleaning is appropriate. If you are unsure, check with the brand.

Work from top to bottom in strips as you steam your fabric sofa, making sure to cover it completely, but avoid saturating the sofa, otherwise it could encourage mold growth. Let the sofa dry completely before using it again. Separate it from the wall and open the windows and doors to help it dry well and prevent moisture from accumulating. You can also place a dehumidifier nearby.

For a deep clean, you can also apply an upholstery cleaner by hand (or with a carpet cleaning machine if permitted), such as HG Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner. Follow package directions, including dilution recommendations.
